TASTING NOTES

An infusion of fruit delivering the essence of Cabernet Franc genuine flavors. Like a basket of summer strawberries, raspberry and sour cherry. Tannins are extremely discrete leaving the fruit and floral notes of violet leading the way. Naturally and simply delicious !

30 years-old Remy Mabileau, following the accidental death of his dad Frédéric in 2020, is now in charge of the estate. His vision is anchored into the natural wine approach following the footstep of his father with whom he worked for the past 4 years. As a friend of the family (I worked 6 years at the estate from 2003-2009) I was there to witness this painful transition and this young man impressed me with his maturity and the result of his first vintage 2020 in this context is brilliant. His dad would be proud...

Description

Frederic Mabileau was the 4th generation to run his family estate in the Saint-Nicolas de Bourgeuil region of France's Loire Valley. Sadly, he passed away in 2020 in a light aircraft crash. His son Remy has taken charge of the estate, working naturally in the vineyard and cellar as his father did, and he's crafted this new cuvée to honor him.

This red is 100% Cabernet Franc from 40 year old vines planted in sandy soils. The grapes undergo whole cluster carbonic maceration and is briefly aged in steel. This process preserves the vibrant, fresh fruit from the vineyard to the glass. This wine is bursting with bright flavors and aromas of wild strawberry, red currant, raspberry, and pomegranate with delicate hints of dried violet and a refreshing snap of acidity on the finish.

The Mabileau family has been cultivating vines since 1620. Inspired by his father Jean-Paul, Frédéric planted his first Cabernet Franc vines in 1988 and 1989 in Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, on a parcel owned by his wife Nathalie and called “Rouillères”. His first vintage was 1991, with the Rouillères cuvée, followed by Eclipse in 1996. Frédéric first shared the winery with his father. They exchanged their observations, sometimes disagreed, but they had in common the desire to make great wine. In 2003, when his father retired, Frédéric combined the two domaines into one – the two heads on the label represent the filiation. He kept the cuvée Graviers and created new ones to express the diversity of the terroir: Coutures from the oldest vines and Racines from a small parcel planted by his grandfather Armand. Today, the domaine spreads over 28 hectares of vineyards in 4 appellations: St-Nicolas de Bourgueil, Bourgueil, Saumur and Anjou.

Farming/vinification practices: Certified organic by Ecocert since 2010 and certified Biodynamic by Biodyvin since 2012. The wines are unfined and lightly filtered.
